The curious case of the life-after-death Cornwall Development Company

Last month we reported County Hall’s decision to close the Cornwall Development Company and its subsidiaries.

This was no off-the-record tip from an anonymous source.  You can read the council’s signed decision sheet here: Closure of Cornwall Development Company Ltd and subsidiaries - Signed Decision Sheet

You can read the five-page background to the decision here: Closure of Cornwall Development Company Ltd and subsidiaries - Report

The closure of CDC was arguably long-overdue.  Its fingerprints are on most of the disastrous misadventures of Cornwall Council over the past decade, staggering from one poor investment to the next.

Rarely have so many council officials travelled to so many sunny countries for such little reward. It is not possible to identify one single job that would exist (outside of CDC itself) as a result of all this questing for international investment.

Yet today (Tuesday) of all days, the council’s chief executive Kate Kennally has announced new appointments to the CDC board of directors.  It is almost as if someone had deliberately chosen the first day of the new council administration, when attention might reasonably be focussed elsewhere, to confess that only two days after the closure decision, Ms Kennally appointed two new directors to the CDC board.

They are William Pearce and Sadie Dunn.

Coming soon: Global Cornish.  A glossy 52-page report says:  “Achieving this mission will be delivered through a three-fold approach:

  • Building an architecture of diaspora engagement for Cornwall that is inclusive of the diverse local and diaspora stakeholders that can benefit from diaspora engagement.
  • Building an architecture of diaspora engagement for Cornwall that is self-sustaining in the mid- to long-term.
  • Ensuring that Cornwall’s diaspora engagement offerings deliver material and meaningful benefits for local Cornish communities and the Cornish diaspora.

This planet-trotting search for money will be presented to a council cabinet meeting next month.

Hold tight to your wallet.

  1. For goodness sakes will somebody not hammer a sharpened hazelnut stake into the dark heart of this feckless incompetent entity to finally and irrevocably put it out of its misery once and for all before it starts costing us all money once more?

Obviously business as usual is hell bent on returning to Kremlin Kernow with a vengeance once more!

  2. UNBELIEVABLE!! Come on new cabinet members do your job and sack this wasteful excuse for a CEO!
